Work Location: Balcatta R&D - Fortescue's Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.
Roster: Monday to Friday
Fortescue is seeking a motivated and hands-on laboratory professional (operator, technician, or scientist) to join our Research & Development team advancing green iron technology. This role is suited to a practically minded scientist or experienced laboratory professional who thrives in a fast-paced, innovation-driven environment and enjoys contributing to cutting-edge technology development.
You do not need to have experience in the relevant field, skills can be taught, you just need desire to learn new things and the confidence to move fast and be ready to innovate.
2-3 Month opportunity – Immediate start
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct experimental testing, analysis, and measurements using custom-built testing stations and PLC-controlled rigs
- Operate and monitor semi-automated test systems safely and effectively
- Assemble, disassemble, inspect, and clean fabricated components and mechanical parts at defined testing stages with strong attention to quality and detail
- Support qualitative and quantitative analysis and characterisation of samples, raw materials, reagents, and products using laboratory techniques (e.g., XRD, SEM and related analytical tools) under guidance from technical specialists
- Prepare chemicals, reagents, and materials required for experimental programs
- Follow established experimental procedures, operating instructions, and safety protocols
- Maintain laboratory equipment, tools, and workspaces in a clean and organised condition
- Accurately record test results and maintain clear documentation
- Comply with all laboratory safety, health, and environmental requirements.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Science, Engineering, or a related field preferred
- Experience working in analytical, metallurgical and research laboratories highly desirable
- Experience with analytical methods and materials characterisation techniques desirable
- Demonstrated hands-on ability to safely set up, operate, and monitor test systems, equipment, or control systems
- Mechanical aptitude with experience assembling and disassembling fittings and components
- Strong attention to detail and organisational skills
- Commitment to maintaining high standards of safety and environmental compliance.
