Our Opportunity
Work Location: Fortescue’s Solomon mine is located on the traditional lands of the Eastern Guruma and Yindjibarndi peoples.
12 month Fixed Term Role
Roster: 8D/6R – FIFO ex Perth
Fortescue is seeking an experienced Process Control Engineer to join the Engineering and Reliability team at Solomon on a 12-month fixed-term contract.
This hands-on, site-based role will support and improve process control systems across the Ore Processing Facility (OPF), including instrumentation, PLC/SCADA systems, industrial networks, servers and historians. You will work closely with Operations, Maintenance and Engineering to troubleshoot plant issues, deliver control system improvements and support shutdowns and projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day process control support, troubleshooting plant faults and identifying opportunities to improve safety, reliability and performance.
- Design, develop, test, commission and modify PLC, SCADA and associated control systems.
- Commission and troubleshooting instrumentation, variable speed drives, remote I/O, industrial networks and field devices.
- Investigate plant downtime and recurring issues through structured troubleshooting and root-cause analysis and implement practical improvements.
- Support the lifecycle management of control system assets, including PLCs, SCADA, historians, servers, networks, backups and technical documentation.
- Provide process control support for shutdowns, brownfield modifications and projects, working collaboratively with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering and external vendors.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Electronic, Control Systems, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related engineering discipline, with approximately 3–5 years’ relevant experience in mining, mineral processing, material handling or heavy industry.
- Strong PLC programming, fault-finding, testing and commissioning experience. GE/Emerson PLC experience is highly desirable, with Allen-Bradley, Schneider, Siemens or other major platforms also considered.
- Experience with GE CIMPLICITY SCADA is highly desirable, with experience in other industrial SCADA platforms also considered.
- Good knowledge of process instrumentation, variable speed drives, industrial networks and protocols such as PROFINET, PROFIBUS, Modbus TCP, EGD, MQTT and OPC UA.
- Working knowledge of mineral processing and bulk material handling equipment such as crushers, screens, conveyors, feeders, stackers and reclaimers. Familiarity with functional safety principles is desirable.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting and communication skills, with the ability to work autonomously in an operational environment.
- Current Australian C Class Driver’s Licence required.
