Senior Software Developer
Senior Software Developer
Our Opportunity
Work location: Perth CBD. Fortescue's Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.
Roster: Monday to Friday with flexible working arrangements.
Fortescue is transforming its business through artificial intelligence (AI), combining our culture of innovation with a practical, outcomes-focused approach to improve asset and employee productivity.
The primary purpose of this role is to bring strong software engineering capability and disciplined software development practices to complex operational challenges, initially focused on material tracking and blend control.
Reporting to Principal Delivery Lead – Operations AI, you will design, build and operate software products that ingest large volumes of operational and sensor data, perform domain processing and modelling, and make the results available through application programming interfaces (APIs) and interactive, map-based front-end applications. You will also help build a reusable technology foundation that unlocks multiple streams of AI value across Fortescue. By connecting operational data, domain models and AI capabilities, the platform will enable teams to rapidly develop and scale a growing portfolio of production AI products across the business.
The successful candidate will be comfortable working within a complex systems landscape that includes custom and enterprise platforms at varying levels of maturity. The role will involve working in forward-deployed, multidisciplinary product teams to accelerate development, as well as contributing to systems engineering teams as products mature through their lifecycle.
In this role, you will work alongside software engineers, data scientists, product teams and operational specialists, combining deep domain knowledge with modern engineering to solve some of Fortescue’s most complex operational problems.
Key Responsibilities
- Own software products across the full lifecycle, from discovery and design to deployment and production support
- Design reusable services, APIs, data flows and applications for material tracking, blend control and other AI use cases
- Translate complex operational problems into clear technical designs and maintainable software
- Build scalable, secure and resilient systems with testing, monitoring and observability embedded
- Collaborate with product, operations, data science and engineering teams to deliver practical solutions
- Resolve performance, reliability and scalability issues, and transition AI products into production
- Provide technical leadership within forward-deployed product squads and systems engineering teams
- Mentor engineers and strengthen software standards, delivery practices and code quality
Qualifications and Experience
- At least five years of experience building and supporting production software
- Strong software engineering capability, ideally with C# and .NET experience
- Experience owning software across the full development lifecycle
- Experience designing maintainable back-end, distributed or data-intensive systems
- Strong understanding of software architecture, systems integration and API design
- Experience with cloud platforms, relational databases and automated deployment
- Strong software quality practices, including automated testing, monitoring and observability
- Experience delivering reliable software in complex, multidisciplinary environments
- The ability to navigate ambiguity and turn complex problems into practical technical solutions
- Strong communication skills and experience providing technical guidance to other engineers
You do not need to meet every requirement to be successful in this role. If you have strong software engineering fundamentals, enjoy solving complex problems and are excited by the opportunity to apply technology and AI to real operational challenges, we encourage you to apply. We value diverse experiences, perspectives and career paths.
Desirable experience
Experience in one or more of the following areas would be advantageous:
- Distributed, event-driven microservices and eventual consistency
- Message buses, queues, transactional outbox patterns and idempotent message processing
- Amazon Web Services (AWS), Docker or Kubernetes
- Git, GitHub Actions and automated delivery pipelines
- PostgreSQL, Snowflake, SQL analytics warehouses or object storage
- Large-scale operational, sensor or Internet of Things data
- Geospatial information systems, spatial data or interactive map visualisation
- Artificial intelligence, machine learning, agentic workflows, simulation or operational modelling
