Our Opportunity

Work Location: Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.

Roster: Monday to Friday

*12 Month Secondment*

Join Fortescue’s Rail Decarbonisation team for a 12-month internal secondment and help shape the next stage of our rail decarbonisation program. As Port and Rail Decarb Study Manager, you will lead the integrated study and project definition for a staged battery-electric locomotive solution across the Pilbara rail network. The initial stage is focused on introducing 21 battery-electric locomotives with minimum charging infrastructure at port and mine sites towards our end state goal of real zero target. You will bring technical, operational and commercial inputs together to define a clear, investment-ready plan and prepare the work for Mini-FID, FEED and execution, while supporting safe, reliable rail operations.

This 12-month secondment is expected to run form December 2026 to December 2027, with a potential start date being early as practical to have enough overlap for handover.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the integrated study and define the Stage 1 scope across battery-electric locomotives, charging infrastructure, operating philosophy, energy requirements and transition planning.
  • Own the integrated project plan, coordinating scope, schedule, milestones, resources, dependencies, risks, issues, decisions and change control.
  • Coordinate Fortescue workstreams, OEMs, charging system suppliers and engineering partners to resolve technical inputs, interfaces and deliverables.
  • Coordinate validation of locomotive and battery configurations, charging requirements, traction power, overhead line systems and brownfield integration.
  • Develop and review cost estimates, total cost of ownership, financial benefits and pathway comparisons, maintaining clear assumptions and estimate bases.
  • Prepare governance and investment materials, including FID deliverables, readiness registers and decision papers, and coordinate readiness for Mini-FID and FEED.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience leading complex studies or projects through definition and investment approval towards FEED or delivery in an operational or infrastructure environment.
  • Strong project planning and controls capability across scope, schedule, cost, risk, governance, interfaces and investment decision processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate multidisciplinary technical, commercial and operational workstreams and engage senior leaders, specialists, operations teams and external partners.
  • Experience turning complex or uncertain information into clear recommendations, delivery plans and decision materials.
  • Commercial awareness, including cost estimating, capital and operating costs, total cost of ownership or business case development.
  • Rail, heavy haul, mining, energy, infrastructure or fleet decarbonisation experience is desirable; knowledge of battery-electric vehicles, charging, traction power, FID/FEED or brownfield delivery is an advantage.
