Our Opportunity
Work Location: Perth, WA. Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.
Roster: Monday to Friday.
The Commercial Manager - Energy Australia is accountable for identifying, developing and progressing commercial energy opportunities across Australia (excluding the Pilbara), spanning the full spectrum of Fortescue Energy’s commercial offer. The role operates with significant autonomy to originate and advance high-value opportunities in power purchase agreements, green smart grids, and associated energy infrastructure, working across diverse sectors and geographies.
Reporting to the GM Energy Australia, this role is the primary commercial interface for energy opportunities in non-Pilbara Australian markets. The Commercial Manager builds and manages a pipeline of opportunities, engages prospective customers and partners, and leads transactions through to commercial close. The role requires a commercially astute individual with the capability to assess complex energy project economics, structure compelling value propositions, and navigate multi-stakeholder environments.
The role collaborates closely with technical, finance, legal and government affairs teams to ensure that commercial outcomes are technically sound, financially robust, and aligned with Fortescue Energy’s strategic objectives and decarbonisation mission.
Key Responsibilities
- Originate, develop and execute commercial energy opportunities across Australia (excluding the Pilbara), spanning power purchase agreements (PPAs), green smart grids, behind-the-meter solutions and emerging energy products.
- Build, manage and prioritise a high-value pipeline of opportunities, ensuring clear visibility of commercial value, risk, timing and strategic alignment.
- Lead customer engagement and act as the primary commercial interface for prospective energy customers, partners, investors and government stakeholders.
- Develop compelling commercial propositions, business cases and market strategies that position Fortescue Energy as a partner of choice in Australia's energy transition.
- Develop and assess project economics, demand profiles, commercial structures and counterparty risk to identify and progress viable opportunities.
- Lead complex commercial negotiations and drive transactions through to execution, including PPAs, energy services agreements, heads of agreement and strategic partnerships.
- Collaborate with technical, finance, legal and government affairs teams to structure commercially attractive and technically robust solutions.
- Provide strategic insights on market trends, customer demand, policy developments and competitive activity to inform business growth and investment decisions.
- Support the development of Fortescue Energy's Australian commercial strategy, including market prioritisation, product positioning and pricing frameworks.
- Represent Fortescue Energy at industry forums, customer engagements and key stakeholder events to expand market presence and generate new commercial opportunities.
Qualifications and Experience
- 10+ years' experience in business development, commercial, energy advisory or energy market roles, ideally within the Australian energy sector.
- Demonstrated success originating, negotiating and closing complex commercial energy transactions, including PPAs, energy services agreements or infrastructure projects.
- Strong understanding of Australian electricity markets, including the NEM and SWIS, and the commercial drivers influencing energy investment decisions.
- Proven experience engaging and influencing C-suite executives, government agencies, network operators and major industrial customers.
- Deep understanding of energy project economics, commercial modelling and investment evaluation.
- Experience developing commercial strategies, market entry plans and customer value propositions in competitive markets.
- Knowledge of renewable energy project development, grid connection frameworks, green tariffs and emerging energy solutions.
- Exceptional stakeholder management, negotiation and communication skills, with the ability to navigate complex multi-party environments.
- Degree qualification in Engineering, Commerce, Economics, Finance or a related discipline; postgraduate qualifications such as an MBA are highly regarded.
- Passion for decarbonisation and a demonstrated ability to identify and convert market opportunities into long-term commercial value.
