Communication Specialist Lead

Our Opportunity

 

Work Location: Iron Bridge – Fortescue's Iron Bridge operation is located on the traditional lands of the Nyamal people.

 

Roster: 8 Days On / 6 Days Off -  FIFO ex Perth

 

You will be responsible for leading the maintenance, reliability and continuous improvement of critical communications infrastructure across mining operations. Supporting the Mine Systems Supervisor and acting as their deputy when required, this role provides technical leadership while remaining hands-on in the installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of technologies including LTE, TETRA radio, wireless networks, Cambium and fleet communication systems.

 

Working closely with operations and technical teams, the Communications Specialist Lead ensures safe, reliable and high-performing communications services that enable efficient mining operations.

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Lead the maintenance, monitoring and optimisation of mine communications infrastructure, ensuring high system availability across LTE, TETRA, wireless and network technologies.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex communications and network faults, providing technical expertise to minimise downtime and support safe mining operations.
  • Coordinate and prioritise daily maintenance activities, ensuring preventative and corrective work is completed in line with business priorities and work management processes.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring and support to technicians and cross-functional teams, sharing knowledge and driving continuous improvement.
  • Monitor network performance, analyse equipment reliability and recommend system enhancements to improve operational efficiency and communication coverage.
  • Support communications infrastructure projects, including system planning, upgrades, commissioning and the relocation of communications assets to meet operational requirements.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records in SAP and ServiceNow, ensuring compliance with work management, reporting and documentation standards.
  • Champion a strong safety culture by following safe work practices, participating in risk assessments, managing hazards and ensuring compliance with all HSE and site requirements.

Qualifications and Experience

 

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in electronics, communications, telecommunications or industrial technology environments, ideally within mining or heavy industry.
  • Proven experience supporting and maintaining wireless communications infrastructure, including LTE, Cisco wireless, TETRA, Cambium radio networks or fleet management systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve faults across communications systems, networks and field hardware, including cable terminations and component replacement.
  • Experience reading and interpreting technical drawings, wiring diagrams and schematics, with hands-on maintenance of communications infrastructure.
  • Previous experience leading or supervising technical teams, with the ability to coach and develop others while maintaining high safety and quality standards.
  • Strong understanding of process control systems, network technologies and industrial communications, with excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Mining site or FIFO experience is highly regarded, along with Working at Heights, EWP, 4WD operation and towing experience.
  • Cert IV in Communications or equivalent trade qualification, current C Class driver's licence, with Open Cabling, First Aid/CPR, S26, HRWL and 4WD training considered advantageous.
