Work Location: Perth – Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk Noongar people. Ad hoc domestic and/or international travel may be required.

The Principal Product Owner is a critical role that bridges the gap between the business and the technology teams leading transformational change across Fortescue through the AI Platform. The Principal Product Owner will lead the direction and delivery of Fortescue’s AI Platform, ensuring it becomes the foundation for AI adoption across the company. This role acts as a conduit between business value and technical excellence, driving the roadmap, adoption, and measurable impact of the AI Platform. As a senior leader, the Principal Product Owner will work across teams to define vision, own the product backlog, prioritise initiatives, and ensure the platform is designed to deliver long-term, sustainable value. 

 

The ideal candidate will bring extensive product management expertise, a strong understanding of AI and cloud platform technologies, and the leadership skills to influence across the enterprise. This role will work closely with the AI Platform Delivery Lead and the AI Platform Manager as well as specialists across architecture, change and marketing, and human centred design. 

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Champion the long-term strategy for the AI Platform, ensuring alignment with Fortescue’s decarbonisation, automation, and productivity objectives
  • Build, manage, and prioritise the AI Platform backlog, creating user stories and acceptance criteria that translate business needs into actionable technical requirements
  • Partner with engineers, data scientists, HCD specialists, operations leaders, and senior leaders to understand needs, align priorities, and drive adoption of the platform
  • Develop business cases and value analysis for new platform features and capabilities, ensuring investments deliver measurable improvements in adoption, usability, and impact
  • Develop and communicate a clear, transparent roadmap for platform development and communicate it to stakeholders at all levels
  • Evaluate emerging AI and cloud technologies, identifying opportunities to accelerate delivery or open new strategic directions
  • Define, track, and report on platform performance metrics including user adoption, integration, scalability, and business impact
  • Champion the platform across the business by running demos, showcases, and engagement sessions, and supporting training and change management efforts
  • Works with the Delivery Lead to ensure high-quality execution and foster a purpose-driven, collaborative culture. 

 

Qualifications and Experience

 

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Business, or a related discipline
  • 5+ years’ experience as a Product Owner and/or Product Manager in platform or enterprise technology environments, delivering measurable business outcomes
  • Strong experience applying agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe) and modern product management practices, including roadmaps, OKRs, and lean experimentation
  • Proven experience leading cross-functional teams delivering AI, ML, or large-scale data platform initiatives
  • Strong stakeholder management capability, with experience communicating effectively with senior leaders
  • Demonstrated ability to translate technical capabilities into business value and drive adoption at scale
  • Expertise in product visioning, backlog management, prioritisation, and roadmap development
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, facilitation, and influencing skills in complex, fast-paced environments
  • Hands-on experience with AI technologies, including recent use of GenAI tools such as ChatGPT, and understanding their impact on user experience
  • Desirable experience in mining or industrial environments, with knowledge of AI governance, security, ethics, and cloud-native or MLOps practices.
