Our Opportunity

Fortescue is driving the transition to Real Zero through innovation, technology and green energy solutions.
We are seeking an experienced Principal Software Developer to join our Green Systems team and lead the architecture, design and delivery of software solutions that support Fortescue's decarbonisation objectives.
Reporting to the Green Systems Development Manager, you will provide technical leadership across multiple greenfield applications, establish development standards, mentor developers and drive best-practice software engineering.
Working closely with technical and business stakeholders, you will design and deliver scalable, cloud-native solutions that enable data-driven decision-making across our Energy and Planning functions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the architecture, design and development of custom software solutions
- Define technical direction, standards and development frameworks across the Green Systems portfolio
- Design and deliver scalable cloud-native applications and microservices
- Lead front-end and back-end software development activities
- Develop proof-of-concepts and prototypes to validate business requirements
- Drive software engineering best practices, including code reviews, testing and CI/CD
- Design and maintain cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
- Collaborate with Fortescue Integrated Technology (FIT), Cyber Security, Enterprise Architecture, Cloud Platform and Data Platform teams
- Engage with business stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into technical solutions
- Mentor and develop senior, junior and graduate developers
- Lead technical problem-solving and provide expertise on complex software challenges
- Champion continuous improvement and emerging technologies, including AI and optimisation opportunities
Qualifications and Experience
- 10+ years' experience designing, developing and delivering custom software solutions, including leadership and principal-level responsibilities.
- Strong expertise in full-stack development using Python, TypeScript, JavaScript, Angular, React, SQL and REST APIs.
- Extensive experience designing and implementing scalable, cloud-native solutions and microservices, preferably within AWS environments.
- Strong knowledge of cloud infrastructure, Docker, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, GitHub and Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
- Experience with PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Amazon RDS and modern database technologies.
- Proven ability to define technical strategy, establish development standards, lead code reviews and mentor software development teams.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into business outcomes.
- Experience working in Agile environments and delivering solutions that support critical operational and business decision-making.
- Knowledge of security best practices, software testing, system architecture and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Exposure to Energy, Mining, Snowflake, AI, machine learning and optimisation technologies is highly regarded.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related discipline; AWS certifications advantageous.
