Work Location: Perth Office - Fortescue's Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people. Ad hoc site travel as required.

The Principal Water Resources Engineer will be responsible for leading a small team to deliver technical assessments, design, and assurance across a wide range of projects. The role will provide leadership and technical support in water resource management, hydrologic analysis, flood-risk assessments, stormwater management, and drainage design, while fostering collaboration, accountability, and professional development within the team.
The position will also oversee the preparation of supporting technical documentation for water resource applications, regulatory compliance programs, data management and analysis, and field work programs, ensuring high-quality outcomes, effective stakeholder engagement, and alignment with project objectives and organisational standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide subject matter expertise and technical leadership in water resource engineering assessments to support business objectives across local and international projects
- Lead and coordinate the day-to-day activities of a small technical team, providing guidance, mentoring, and support to ensure effective delivery outcomes
- Develop water management strategies, plans, systems, and water balance models across all project lifecycle stages
- Deliver hydrology and water resource studies, including baseline and post-development assessments, flood risk analysis, and stormwater management design
- Participate in risk assessments and hazard identification activities to support safe and sustainable project delivery
- Provide technical advice influencing the design, construction, and maintenance of engineered water infrastructure and associated systems
- Collect, analyse, and interpret hydrological, rainfall, and environmental data to support studies, investigations, and decision-making
- Support the design of surface water infrastructure including drainage systems, culverts, watercourse crossings, and related built structures using specialised engineering software and calculations
- Assist in preparation of construction plans, specifications, scopes of work, cost estimates, and material quantity calculations, as well as high-quality technical reports and presentations
- Liaise and collaborate with multidisciplinary stakeholders including project engineers, approvals teams, consultants, contractors, and operational teams to support water approvals and project outcomes.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, or related Engineering discipline, with Chartered Engineer status (or eligibility to obtain chartership)
- Minimum 15 years’ experience in water resource engineering across consulting, mining, water, or other complex industrial environments
- Demonstrated experience leading and coordinating small technical engineering teams, including mentoring, capability development, and day-to-day delivery oversight
- Strong technical expertise in water resource management, including water balance assessments, surface water hydrology, hydraulic modelling, and stormwater management
- Proficient in GIS and industry-standard hydrologic and hydraulic modelling software such as RoRB, TUFLOW, and HEC-RAS
- Sound understanding of relevant industry standards, guidelines, and best practices, including ARR2019
- Experience in water licensing and permitting related to surface water in WA (RiWI) is considered favourable.
- Demonstrated experience delivering technical outcomes within multidisciplinary engineering and operational project environments
- Strong capability to communicate complex water resource management concepts clearly across technical and non-technical stakeholder groups
- Passion for mentoring and capability development, with proven ability to foster technical excellence, teamwork, and continuous improvement within engineering teams.
