Fortescue is transforming its business using AI and data to automate, optimise, and decarbonise operations across mining and energy. The Data and AI Platform team builds and maintains the technical foundations that enable scalable, secure, and high-impact AI delivery.

 

 

 

The Platform team is responsible for architecting and engineering reusable AI components, orchestration frameworks, and cloud-based infrastructure that support data scientists, engineers, and digital product teams across the business. Our work enables consistent, trusted, and efficient development of GenAI agents, MLOps workflows, and enterprise-grade AI applications.

 

 

 

The team attracts and develops individuals with strong engineering capability, deep curiosity, and a passion for enabling transformation at scale. Team members in this space play a key role in scaling Fortescue’s AI ambitions by driving platform innovation, aligning with enterprise architecture, and accelerating the delivery of value-focused AI solutions.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Lead the design and delivery of AI and data solutions aligned to business objectives, enterprise architecture, and Fortescue standards
  • Provide architectural guidance to internal teams and vendors, ensuring solutions integrate effectively into Fortescue’s technology landscape
  • Monitor emerging technology trends and collaborate with senior leadership to shape AI, data, and IT strategies and roadmaps
  • Lead business process improvement initiatives, from ideation through to solution design and implementation
  • Oversee and contribute to solution development using best practices in software engineering, AI, data management, ethics, safety, and explainability
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive system and solution architectures, including high- and low-level designs, integration models, and data flow artefacts
  • Act as a technical authority across AI/GenAI/LLMs, data platforms (e.g. Snowflake), cloud technologies, IoT, geospatial systems, and security governance
  • Engage and influence stakeholders by translating complex technical concepts into clear, actionable insights for diverse audiences
  • Ensure solutions comply with governance, quality, security, and regulatory requirements, contributing to architecture and security review forums
  • Mentor and develop architects and engineers, support resourcing and recruitment, manage requirements and change processes, and drive continuous innovation and improvement.

 

Qualifications and Experience

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline, with extensive experience in solution or enterprise architecture roles
  • 8+ years’ experience designing and delivering complex, enterprise-scale AI and data solutions
  • Strong experience with cloud platforms (AWS and/or Azure), including infrastructure-as-code and DevOps practices
  • Proven capability working within mining, resources, or operational technology environments
  • Expert application of architecture tools and frameworks such as TOGAF, Archi, BizzDesign, and Draw.io
  • Strong software engineering capability, including proficiency in programming languages such as Python and C#, and familiarity with modern frontend frameworks (React, Angular, Vue)
  • Solid understanding of systems design, data modelling, data management, and integration technologies, including Snowflake, IoT data (MQTT, Kafka), and CI/CD using GitHub Actions
  • Deep understanding of contemporary and traditional AI frameworks and platforms, including OpenAI, Azure AI, and AWS Bedrock services
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and build high-performing technical teams, supporting organisational capability development
  • Strong stakeholder engagement, communication, and problem-solving skills, with a commitment to Fortescue’s values, innovation, and governance standards.
