Senior Simulation Engineer - Virtual Validation
About Us
Fortescue is both a proud West Australian company and a global green solutions business. We are recognised for our culture, innovation and industry-leading development of infrastructure, mining assets and green energy initiatives.
Our Opportunity
Work Location: Dawson Rd, Airport – Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk Noongar people
Roster: Monday to Friday
The Senior Simulation Engineer develops plant and physical models of mining assets for use in MIL, SIL, and HIL simulations to support verification and validation activities. Reporting to the Virtual Validation Lead, the role focuses on implementing and maintaining simulation models, test harnesses, and environment configurations that enable efficient, reliable, and repeatable testing of control systems and software. Operating within established validation frameworks and toolchains, the engineer delivers hands-on technical solutions while collaborating with verification, validation, and development teams to ensure simulations accurately represent system behaviours and interfaces and are effectively integrated into development and testing workflows.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement, configure, and maintain MIL, SIL, and HIL simulation environments and test harnesses aligned with defined architectures and standards
- Develop, integrate, and maintain simulation models, software components, and physical interfaces to support control systems development and validation
- Collaborate with Product Owners, System Leads, and V&V teams to translate system architectures into simulation models, scenarios, and test cases
- Support setup and operation of HIL and bench test infrastructure, including instrumentation integration and rig configuration
- Execute simulation-based test campaigns, including running test suites, analysing results, troubleshooting issues, and contributing to reporting
- Apply engineering standards, safety requirements, and quality processes in simulation development and operation
- Integrate simulation environments into CI/CD pipelines, improving automation, test orchestration, and repeatability of validation activities
- Maintain configuration management of simulation environments, including version control of models, scenarios, and test artefacts.
- Document simulation designs, interfaces, usage guidelines, and limitations, contributing to knowledge sharing and best practices
- Drive continuous improvement of simulation fidelity, performance, and usability while mentoring junior engineers and collaborating with IT to ensure secure and reliable environments.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor of Engineering (or equivalent) with 8+ years experience in software and/or hardware development and testing, with a strong focus on simulation
- Practical experience in developing, configuring or operating virtual test environments, simulation frameworks or similar platforms
- Experience across the software development lifecycle, including implementation, integration, configuration management and tooling to support testing and traceability
- Experience developing or supporting software that interacts with physical devices (e.g. embedded systems, control systems, industrial equipment)
- Understanding of electronics hardware integration and testing methods, including hardware interfaces, instrumentation and bench setups (highly advantageous)
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, build systems and test automation frameworks, particularly where they integrate with simulations or MIL/SIL/HIL environments (advantageous)
- Proficiency with version control systems such as GitHub, focusing on configuration of models, test harnesses and environment artefacts
- Experience with collaboration and documentation tools such as Jira and Confluence
- Hands‑on experience with Hardware‑in‑the‑Loop platforms (e.g. dSPACE, National Instruments, Vector, Speedgoat) and their configuration and integration (highly advantageous)
- Experience with Model‑Based Design (e.g. MATLAB/Simulink), including model integration into SIL/MIL/HIL environments.
