Functional Safety Engineer

Work Location: Port Hedland – Fortescue’s Hedland Operations are located on the traditional lands of the Kariyarra people
Roster: 8 days on / 6 days off – FIFO ex Perth or Residentially based in Port Hedland (relocation assistance offered)
Reporting to the Engineering Superintendent, the Process Safety Engineer is responsible for leading and embedding best-practice process safety and functional safety across Fortescue’s Port Hedland Operations.
This role ensures Major Hazard Controls and Safety Critical Elements are effectively designed, verified, maintained and continuously improved across port, processing and associated facilities. The position plays a key role in maintaining compliance with legislative obligations under the Work Health and Safety Act and associated Regulations, while aligning with Fortescue standards and functional safety lifecycle requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify, develop, review, and maintain functional safety compliance for balanced machines in accordance to Fortescue Standard
- Work with PCS, operation, maintenance and asset management to resolve functional safety gaps or non-conformances.
- Perform or support functional safety audits, assessments, and compliance activities.
- Support functional safety matters related to incidents, modifications or continuous improvement.
- Assist with the development of standards, procedures, and governance process for balanced machine functional safety at Fortescue.
- Involve in Team Based Risk Assessments that related to machine functional safety compliance.
- Develop functional safety management plan with the project team for any new or machine upgrade.
- Provide governance over Protective Control Functions and associated audits, ensuring:
- Control system design remains aligned to documented requirements.
- Protective Devices and field controls are function-tested and not bridged or inhibited.
- Drive continuous improvement in process safety performance, standards and training.
- Support implementation and ongoing management of the Functional Safety Management Plan (FSMP) and lifecycle requirements.
Qualifications and Experience
- Degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechatronics, or Mechanical).
- Experience with balanced machine in mining industry.
- Experience in conducting risk assessments and defining machine safety functions.
- Ability to interpret OEM documentation and translate it into operational safety outcomes.
- Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong knowledge of:
- WHS legislative framework
- Functional safety standards (AS/NZS 62061, AS 61508)
- Experience facilitating risk assessments and SIL reviews.
- Strong stakeholder engagement capability across multidisciplinary teams.
- High level communication skills and ability to influence at all levels of the organisation.
- Competency in SAP and Microsoft Office Suite (desirable).
