Roster:  8 days on / 6 days off – FIFO ex Perth or residentially based in Port Hedland

 

Bring your technical expertise and hands-on rail experience to one of Australia’s most dynamic heavy haul rail networks. At Fortescue, we’re seeking a driven and safety-focused Rail Infrastructure Specialist to support the reliability, integrity, and performance of our rail assets.

In this critical role, you’ll provide technical guidance and specialist support across track, civil, and associated rail infrastructure systems. You’ll work closely with Maintenance  and Network Operations teams to ensure infrastructure standards are upheld, defects are proactively managed, and improvement opportunities are identified and delivered.

With safety and asset performance front of mind, you’ll contribute to inspections, investigations, technical assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives that enhance network reliability and support long-term asset strategies.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) technical support for track, civil, and associated rail infrastructure systems.
  • Lead  embedded NDT contracting partners within the department along with managing the safety and ongoing improvement of contractor deliverables.
  • Sustain key engineering and reliability systems and processes to support continuous improvement with safe, cost-effective, asset reliability and defect elimination.
  • Providing specialist NDT engineering solutions and strategies that drive continuous improvement. 
  • Monitoring Asset Management KPI's, identify gaps in performance and implement actions.
  • Manage weld testing and inspections to ensure flash-butt weld and other weld types, and qualified for site use and systems sustained for the materials in use.
  • Support our welding contractor partners with technical advice on welding specifications.
  • Investigate infrastructure defects, failures, and performance issues, identifying root causes and recommending solutions.
  • Manage the planning of testing and inspections across the network along with meeting work management objectives.
  • Support the monitor of asset performance trends and recommend strategies to optimize reliability and lifecycle outcomes
  • Ensure all activities are completed in alignment with Fortescue’s safety and environmental standards
  • Drive continuous improvement in infrastructure management systems, processes, and technical standards.

Qualifications and Experience

  • 5+ years’ experience in rail infrastructure, track maintenance, or heavy haul rail operations.
  • Minimum 5 years NDT experience with UT and MT Level 2 ISO9712 certification
  • Demonstrate experience in PAUT, MPI, UT and rail flaw detection vehicle systems.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of track structures, rail components, formation, drainage, and civil assets
  • Experience in infrastructure inspections, defect management, and compliance with rail standards
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret asset performance data
  • Experience working with SAP or similar asset management systems
  • Tertiary qualifications in Engineering, Civil, Rail Infrastructure, or a related discipline (desirable but not essential)
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to work collaboratively across operations, maintenance, and project teams
